Opera Mini is a mobile version of the famous Opera web browser. Although I don’t use Opera as my primary browser, I prefer Firefox, I use Opera Mini on my mobile phone. It is a powerful little application and I think it should start shipping with all phones.
Why?
- Standardisation
Developing mobile websites isn’t the easiest task. In fact I think it’s much harder than developing normal websites. There are so many different handsets with different browsers which makes it harder to test websites and add functionality. Not all handsets support the same things. If Opera Mini is present on all handsets then developers and designers can work in a set environment, know their limitations and reduce testing and development time. - Light Weight, Feature Packed & Fast
Opera Mini is a rather small application considering the features it boasts. RSS, bookmarks, photo sharing, downloads, secure connections and many more. Opera Mini also saves on bandwidth costs and speeds up page requests:Mini technology
Opera Mini uses a remote server to pre-process Web pages before sending them to your phone. Web content is compressed to reduce the size of data transferred, enabling handling on simpler phones and creating fast browsing at low costs.
- Handset Support
Since Opera Mini is Java application it supports a lot of old handsets and almost all of the newer handsets.
Delivering mobile content via the web needs to become a lot easier, especially in Africa. Something like this would help delivering mobile content to millions of people (who do not have access to PCs) a whole lot easier.
